251. Jonathan Kemp: The Final Steps of a 292-Day Walk
19 October 2026
About This Episode
On 1 January 2026, Jonathan Kemp set off from the Shetland Islands on an extraordinary journey across Britain and Ireland. After 292 days and approximately 4,800 kilometres on foot, he finally arrived in Galway.
For Episode 251 of The Ireland Podcast, Fender Jackson joins Jonathan for the final stretch along Galway's Long Walk towards the Spanish Arch, recording their conversation as the journey comes to an end.
Jonathan reflects on the physical challenges of nearly ten months on the road, the kindness of strangers, and what it feels like to reach a destination after so many days of walking.
He also speaks openly about living with bipolar II disorder, experiencing severe depression, and the importance of finding effective treatment and support. His journey, inspired by his book *Finding Peace of Mind*, has raised awareness of mental health and supported four charities across Britain and Ireland.
There are lighter moments too, including a frightening encounter with cattle, the possibility of another adventure in Asia, and Jonathan's relief at finally giving his feet a rest.
As the pair approach the finish line, an unexpected encounter with an image of Sinéad O'Connor leads to a moving reflection on her life and mental health.
It's an unscripted conversation between two friends who have known each other for around 20 years, recorded during the final moments of an extraordinary journey.
